Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
