The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
